Amazon Announces Fresh Job Cuts, Mainly in Its Retail Business

Amazon has announced another round of job reductions, with most of the latest cuts affecting its Stores division, the business responsible for the company's core online shopping operations. The company described the number of affected positions as relatively small, while people familiar with the matter said the cuts involved fewer than 1,000 white-collar employees.

The latest layoffs come during Prime Big Deal Days, one of Amazon's major shopping events, which began on Tuesday and continues through Wednesday. The timing places the workforce changes alongside a major period of activity for the company's e-commerce business.

Employees in the US, India and UK Affected

According to information reviewed by Reuters, employees in several countries, including the United States, India and the United Kingdom, were informed about the workforce reductions.

Internal communications indicated that multiple teams within Amazon's Stores organization were affected. These reportedly included customer service and selling partner services, while other parts of the company may also have experienced reductions.

An Amazon spokesperson said the company had made changes to parts of its Stores business because it believed the revised organizational structure would allow the division to focus more effectively on its priorities.

Latest Cuts Follow Major Workforce Reduction

The latest move follows a much larger restructuring carried out by Amazon over the previous year. The company eliminated around 30,000 corporate jobs between 2025 and January 2026, making it one of the biggest workforce reductions in its history.

Amazon has continued making smaller adjustments across different business areas since that restructuring. The company has been working under CEO Andy Jassy to simplify its corporate structure, reduce bureaucracy and improve operational efficiency.

The January 2026 round alone involved about 16,000 corporate positions, according to Reuters. The broader restructuring affected areas across Amazon and came as the company increasingly focused on efficiency and automation.

Pandemic Hiring Cited as a Factor

Amazon founder and executive chairman Jeff Bezos also addressed the workforce reductions in a television interview. He said the company had significantly expanded its workforce during the COVID-19 pandemic as consumers increasingly relied on online shopping.

Bezos explained that Amazon had increased employee numbers substantially during that period because of the extraordinary growth in demand. As conditions changed after the pandemic, the company subsequently had to adjust its workforce.

Amazon's workforce expansion during the pandemic was substantial, particularly as online shopping volumes surged and the company invested heavily in its operations and infrastructure.

Amazon Continues Focus on Efficiency

The latest layoffs reflect Amazon's broader effort to reorganize its operations and concentrate resources on its most important business priorities.

The company has increasingly emphasized efficiency, streamlined management structures and the use of technology to improve productivity. Artificial intelligence and automation have also become important parts of the wider discussion around Amazon's future workforce needs.

While the latest reduction is considerably smaller than the company's previous large-scale restructuring, it demonstrates that Amazon's workforce adjustments are continuing across individual business units.

For employees in India, the UK and the US, the latest announcement highlights how Amazon's ongoing organizational changes are extending beyond a single region or department. The company is continuing to reshape parts of its business as it balances growth, efficiency and changing consumer demand.
